Recession Proof Your Fitness

"Don't let this RECESSION become a REGRESSION for your Fitness goals!"

By Brenden M. Dilley

Brenden DilleyDuring this current economic crisis a lot is changing in the world.  Where we work, where we play, where we eat, what we watch, and how we spend our free time.  It’s not an accident that people are spending less and doing less.  Most people have hunkered down and will cautiously wait for the tide to turn.  In the mean time it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your life and more specifically your fitness.

One of the beautiful things about exercise is that it’s fairly cheap.  Whether you go to a gym ($25-$50 per month) or are a part of a sports club (soccer/running/cycling/climbing) you can participate in these activities for very little money.  For many of us (such as me) who aren’t currently going to a gym you can get creative and perform your workouts from the comfort of your own living room with the same fantastic results.  Another benefit to beginning or continuing a fitness regiment during an economic downturn is that it can be a great way to spend quality time with your family without spending a lot of money.  My family and I have been spending quite a bit of time out in the wilderness.  $8 dollars will gain you entry into most lakes and national parks for the day.  We’ve taken a fishing pole and a backpack full of snacks and had more than a few memorable Sunday’s.    Perhaps you’re the more competitive type who likes to participate in sports.  Most adult recreational leagues whether it be basketball, softball, or tennis can be joined for a modest amount.

Psychologically you’re being inundated with bad news about the economy.  Whether it’s at work, home, school, or a friend’s house the assault is on for your psyche.  This gives you all the more incentive to anchor yourself to activities that will yield positive results and will allow you to release the stress from the day.  During the toughest stretches of my life whether it be financial, relationships or family I’ve always had an outlet.  There are very few things in our lives that we can actually control.  Your positive outlook and your personal fitness are two of the most important aspects that will sustain you through even the worst parts of your life.  Participating in a regular fitness routine will bring balance to your life and assist in giving you perspective.  Being physically fit will also have other unintentional results.  By committing to a lower calorie diet you can save yourself quite a bit of money on food from the store and restaurants.  When you go out with friends you can focus on having a good time and buying a drink for that special someone rather than obsessing about what portion of the bill you owe for that massive plate of pasta!  Taking a more active approach in life will also allow you to get out of the house and network with like-minded people, perhaps making a new friend or two to spend-time with.

Don’t let the economic BS of today ruin your tomorrow.  Take advantage of this slow down by working on yourself and preparing your body for all of the challenges that life has to offer.  Empower yourself by saving money on food bills by becoming more aware of your nutrition.  Spend more time with friends and family doing activities outdoors that cost virtually nothing.  Increase your fitness level so that it allows you to take care of things that you might have otherwise paid someone else to do.  Things like mowing the lawn, washing your car, painting your bedroom, starting a garden.  By becoming more physically fit you empower yourself to become more independent and that can do wonders for your mental outlook as well as your wallet.

If you’re ready to begin this journey but perhaps aren’t sure where to start you can check out our new “Remote Personal Training” feature on our website for an affordable solution.  Or if you live in the central valley of California and would like a more one-on-one approach please contact us for a free consultation about “Personal Training.”
