Excess Postexercise Oxygen Consumption and Fat Loss
Fat loss is one of the most common goals when people get involved in an exercise and training program. The market today is flooded with products that claim fat loss. From pills, to funky machines, to gimmicky pieces of equipment, everywhere you turn there seems to be a quick fix to lose fat. You turn on your television and you’re almost guaranteed to see an infomercial or commercial for some type of abs machine, or pill to take to lose fat. If we all could just do some crunches and take a pill to lose fat, I’m pretty sure most of us wouldn’t be trying to lose fat anymore.
The point I’m making here is that in order to burn fat, it takes effort. There is a science to it. In order to burn fat, you have to give your body a reason to burn it off. This all comes down to exercise and training. To put it simply, the body must use more calories than are being consumed. This means that throughout the day you must burn off more calories than you will take in that day to reduce body fat. This is the law of Thermodynamics. The key is to focus on burning as many calories as possible. This will lead to body fat reduction.
Now I’m not just talking about burning calories during your workout, but also throughout the rest of your day and while you sleep. This is where the type of training you do comes into play. There is a term called EPOC. This stands for Excess Postexercise Oxygen Consumption. This means the elevation of your metabolism after exercise, which means burning greater amounts of calories well after you have finished exercising. This is achieved by a high intensity and varied training program. The greater the intensity and challenge of the training session, the greater the calories burned in your off time as well as your training session. Its not just about burning calories as you train, its about burning calories well after you’ve left the facility. This is how the body optimizes fat loss. This is what we do at Hublife Fitness.
